Step With Us Into Patagonia

Our Eclipse Expedition, Dec 12-16th, 2020, begins in the Patagonian city San Carlos de Bariloche, “the Switzerland of South America”—hub for the finest chocolate, hiking, skiing and adventure. We journey to the heart of eclipse totality in Piedra del Aguila, where expert astrophotographer Peter Zelinka prepares and guides us for capturing the occurrence, followed by two days of adventure in Patagonia and a la carte activities. Choose from a luxurious boat ride, a rewarding vista after a guided hike, and more—this is your special time here with us.

Our Patagonia Extension, Dec 7-12th, 2020, takes us beyond Bariloche to experience the glacial awe of El Calafate, authentic culture of estancias near Rio Mitre, a night experience in Cerro Huiliche and the remarkable wonder of Chile, Torres Del Paine, where we’ll spend two full days amongst the giant granite mountains and wildlife inherent to this remote national park.

All skill levels are welcome, but it is highly recommended that you are comfortable operating your camera in a semi-manual mode (Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority) and have some understanding of Manual settings. PATAGONIA ECLIPSE ITINERARY

DECEMBER 12 — BARILOCHE ARRIVAL, ORIENTATION DINNER

You’re here—Patagonia! We are excited to pick up our fellow adventurers at Bariloche International Airport (BRC) at 12 p.m. We will be waiting with snacks and water. Participants coming from other locations or arriving on earlier days may simply meet us at our special hotel located directly in Bariloche, nestled in the Rio Negro province of Argentina.

Upon arrival to our luxury hotel, take some time to get settled in and perhaps walk the town a bit for some fresh Argentinean air and fine chocolate.

At 6 p.m. local time, join us for greetings and conversation—over a delicious Argentinean dinner. We will take some time to discuss photography concepts, as well as some exciting activities we have planned for the next few days. Then we will retire to our cozy rooms, so that we are ready for an exciting day of photography and adventure in Patagonia tomorrow.

DECEMBER 13 — PATAGONIA LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY, ECLIPSE PRACTICE lessoN in-the-field

Breakfast can be had at everyone’s leisure at our charming hotel. We suggest waking up early so you can take a walk, immersing yourself in the culture of beautiful San Carlos de Bariloche. Remember, you are officially in Patagonia!

Our day will begin later with a landscape photography escapade in Nahuel Huapi National Park, where we will take in stunning scenery of mountain landscapes, waterways and more. During our adventure, at one of the beautiful vistas, we will perform a trial run for the total solar eclipse. We will guide you on settings, and have you practice with your camera. This way you will be comfortable, ready and excited for the two minutes of maximum totality (and longer periods of ‘partial’ and ‘full’ stages) that will occur tomorrow afternoon. Questions are more than welcome!

After our outdoor adventure, we will enjoy a dinner of local Argentinean cuisine, then retire to bed to get enough rest for the real thing tomorrow—the exciting, total solar eclipse in Patagonia.

DECEMBER 14 — total solar eclipse EXPERIENCE in patagonia

Here we are—the day of the total solar eclipse in Patagonia! Today we will depart by 7:00 a.m. local time, driving through Argentina’s stunning Lake District to get to our exclusive location along the central axis of the eclipse. We will arrive to an eclipse-dedicated observatory site, tented with gourmet food and premium wines.

(In order to get the best results, and have the easiest time shooting the eclipse, here's the gear Peter recommends: An iOptron SkyGuider Pro or SkyWatcher Star Adventurer, a Tamron 150-600mm lens (you may also want a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter for even more detail of the sun) Thousand Oaks Solar Filter, Vello Shutterboss II remote (or similar), and a sturdy tripod.) When the moments come, we experience the magic dance of light, shade and sound as we capture the partial, full, and maximum phases of the total solar eclipse in Argentina. After the fulfilling feeling of capturing the eclipse, we begin our late afternoon drive through beautiful Patagonia scenery.

DECEMBER 15 — DISCUSSION ON post-processing the total solar eclipse, rest, a la carte patagonia activities

Today we start by catching some rest, then breakfast at everyone’s leisure. We have scheduled time to all gather together as Peter teaches us how to post-process a successful total solar eclipse photograph.

After we’ve had a chance to make images we’re proud of, we have exciting options for the day in Patagonia. We can either choose from one of the A La Carte Patagonia activities (below), take our own walk through town to do exciting Christmas and other gift shopping, or rest more before our travels home tomorrow.

A La Carte Activities in Patagonia:

PATAGONIA EXTENSION ITINERARY

DECEMBER 7 — TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK

Good morning from the essence of Patagonia! We begin our day early to enjoy a day of guided excursion through the infamous and remote Torres del Paine National Park, exploring overwhelming views of mountains and lakes such as Sarmiento, Nordenskjold and Pehoe. The rich fauna will be present through “guanacos” (a Patagonian relative to the llama) fox, several species of birds, and more.

A short trek will take us to “Salto Grande,” a great waterfall flowing from the rivers of the park. Later we will access the administrative headquarters of CONAF to continue to the Grey Lake where after a 30-minute walk through a thousand-year-old forest, we will get to its beach, a place to admire big pieces of icebergs coming from the glacier.

After our outdoor adventure, we will enjoy a cozy and warm dinner of local Argentinean cuisine. We’ll then retire to bed to be rested for another exciting exploration of Torres del Paine, diving deeper into the experience.

DECEMBER 8 — TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK

Our day begins early to start another full-day excursion in Torres del Paine National Park. Today we will visit the Eastern area of the park fairly off of the beaten path. If you decide to hike, we’ll arrive at Laguna Azul and be able to see all 3 Torres from a very unique and different angle—if lucky, we’ll come across guanacos along the way. We can hike further North depending on the time.

On the way home for the evening, we are able to use the chance to stop at another impressive waterfall called, “Salto Paine.”

After a second and richly immersive day within Torres Del Paine National Park, we retire to bed with excitement for our journey to El Calafate tomorrow—a land of glaciers.

DECEMBER 9 — TORRES DEL PAINE, chile, TO EL CALAFATE, argentina, and night sky experience

Today we depart Torres Del Paine area with fulfillment in our hearts and exceptional photographs to do the memories justice. Onward we travel to a new wonder, El Calafate, a land of spectacular beauty in the Perito Moreno Glacier, Upsala Glacier, Spegazzini Glacier, O’Nelly Glacier and the Argentino Lake. Located in the heart of immense Patagonia, El Calafate gives us a chance to experience unforgettable activities which leave us breathless and eager to find out what else there is to be discovered.

After our journey to El Calafate and checking into our new hotel in this area, we rest before heading out to our one-of-a-kind night experience. We drive up Cerro Huiliche in 4x4 vehicles, arriving at “La Seccion,” old post of the Ea. 25 de Mayo, where dinner, a burning fireplace, wine and whiskey will be waiting for us. We’ll have time to photograph throughout the evening, but most especially after dinner when the night sky comes out in its glory. This area is exceptional for night photography (weather pending).

After an amazing first night in a new country, Argentina, and amazing night photographs, we head back to our hotel around 1 a.m. local time.

DECEMBER 10 — perito moreno glacier, light glacier trek, and la usina

Today is very exciting! We depart from El Calafate to Bajo la Sombra port, located 8km before the infamous, stunning Perito Moreno Glacier. Here, we’ll embark to cross the Rico branch of the beautiful Argentino Lake and descend on the southwest coast after a 20 minutes boat cruise. Then we’ll access the refuge where our guides will take us through a forest before reaching the glacier. We’ll be fitted in crampons (gripping clips that attach to our own hiking shoes) by the guides in order to have secure footing on the ice. The path over the glacier takes us about 1.5 hours over interesting fissures, sinks and small lagoons. We’ll enjoy a nice ice-picnic lunch on this adventure—a unique experience and story to share when we return home!

After our trekking experience, we’ll arrive at the walking sector of the area which allows for stunning vistas of the Perito Moreno Glacier in all levels and angles of her majesty. On our return home, we’ll make a stop at La Usina, an amazing estancia on the shore of the Mitre River where we’ll meet the locals and have a snack.

Arriving back to El Calafate we’ll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and retire to bed for some rest.

DECEMBER 11 — cerro cirstales and parador rio mitre

Today we take an immersive exploration into the culture of Cerro Los Cristales, by way of the Old Route 15—the rout of the estancias. After about an hour drive, we’ll arrive at the beginning of a trail upon which we’ll enjoy incredible views of the Andes, Roca Lake and Perito Moreno Glacier. We will take approximately two hours to walk and enjoy this area, taking photographs along the way. Then we’ll stop for a lovely picnic lunch amongst stunning views before returning down to the Parador Rio Mitre, where an authentic Argentinean roast of lamb to the stick will be waiting for us.

At the estancia, we’ll have an opportunity to meet and photograph the gauchos, animals and moments of life on the Argentinean farm.

DECEMBER 12 — DEPARTURES TO BARILOCHE FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE EXPEDITION, OR DEPARTURES HOME UNTIL THE NEXT ADVENTURE

After amazing days deep within the heart of what makes Patagonia, we fly as a group to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina’s Lake District. Our luxury art hotel on the coast of Nahuel Huapi Lake will be our home for the next few days while we prepare for the total solar eclipse and enjoy a couple of days of activities in this new region of Patagonia.

For those that may not be joining the Eclipse Expedition, it is bittersweet to say “goodbye-for-now,” as we appreciate the experience we all shared and know that soon we may see you on another adventure (hint: walking with grizzly bears)!

GEAR LIST

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHY ITEMS TO BRING ON YOUR EXPEDITION

• DSLR or mirrorless camera

• At least two camera batteries

• At least two memory cards

• A telephoto lens for capturing the eclipse (we recommend a 150-600mm). If you don’t have access to a 150-600mm, the shortest length we recommend bringing is 400mm or a lens + teleconverter combo that will get you to that length.

• You will need a solar filter to capture the eclipse. Peter recommend's this Thousand Oaks Camera filter for the best results. Be sure to select the correct filter thread for your telephoto lens. The Tamron 150-600mm lens uses a 95mm thread.

• If you have a star tracker, it's recommended to bring it along. Once you have the star tracker setup, it will automatically follow the sun across the sky. This will allow you more time to enjoy the view, and less time fiddling with your camera. If you don't have a star tracker yet, check out Peter's comprehensive star tracker buying guide and tutorials for more information.

• A lens you enjoy for landscapes so you’re able to photograph during our nature expeditions and elsewhere if the opportunities arise

• Tripod

• Intervalometer

  • An intervalometer will allow you to take exposures longer than 30 seconds and multiple successive exposures (for star trails), help prevent camera shake, and more.

    (These be purchased on Amazon for approximately $50 and arrive within two days. Make sure you are getting the one that is appropriate for your particular camera. This one is for the Sony A7RIII. You can search Amazon or Google for the terms "intervalometer" + [your camera name and model].)

• Hand warmers (approximately $7 on Amazon or $5 at your local Walmart) and rubber bands

  • As your camera is brought from warm interiors to cooler settings, dew can accumulate on your lens glass and completely fog up your images! Photographers have come up with the ingenious solution of securing a couple of hand warmers onto the lens with a rubber band, which keeps the lens temperature regulated enough that it prevents the condensation from occurring!

• Laptop (If you would like to follow along during our post-processing instructions, we recommend that you bring a laptop to be able to participate and edit your photographs while with us.)

• Headlamp (We recommend something like this because it can switch between a regular and a red, night vision light. While having a regular light will be important for walking in the dark, having red lights are important for night photographers because this type of light preserves your night vision and does not negatively impact other photographer's exposures in the way that regular light does.)

• Camera bag (We will be out shooting for a few hours at a time, so be sure to bring extra water and snacks in case you tend to get hungry during the middle of the shoots.)

TAKE YOUR LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THIS GEAR

• Neutral density filter for your wide-angle / landscape lens

An ND filter will allow you to take longer exposures when you normally wouldn't be able to because the scene is too bright. This is the key to nice soft clouds in landscapes, milky waterfalls, etc. 

(We recommend anywhere from a 3-stop to 10-stop ND filter, but make sure it is of decent quality. B+W brand, HOYA, LEE square filters are all great choices.)

• Graduated neutral density filter for your wide-angle / landscape lens

A graduated ND filter serves the same purpose as the ND filter described above, however the darkening effect takes place only on the top half of the filter, which allows your lighter sky to be exposed more similarly to your darker foreground. A 2-stop GND is a good start.

• Polarizing filter for your wide-angle / landscape lens

A polarizing filter will help deepen colors.

TAKE YOUR night and astro PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THIS GEAR

For our night sky opportunities in Patagonia, you can get beautiful captures with a simple wide-angle lens and a tripod. One night in particular during the extension, we will have a night experience in the El Calafate region of Patagonia. Here we will be under very dark skies, so those participants who decide to bring star-trackers and entry-level astrophotography gear will want to utilize them tonight (although they are not needed). OTHER RECOMMENDED GEAR

You know your body best, so we ask you to take a look at the historical weather for the area and decide what your body needs to stay comfortable. In December, Patagonia usually ranges from low of 45 degrees F to a high of 70 degrees F. It is often said that in Patagonia, you can experience all seasons in one day. Since the weather can shift so frequently, consider bringing items you will be most comfortable in in all weather conditions.

• A real watch! This way, in the case of a hike, if a few would like to walk at a different pace, we can say to everyone that by 3 p.m. we should all turn around to meet back at the starting point by 4 pm. In this case, we ask that at least two people stick together, yet ideally we all are in the same vicinity at the same time, with an engine and a caboose. We like to stay as a pack.

• A good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes that feel comfortable when on your feet for extended periods of time.

• Vitamins and medicines (Taking some vitamins and having over-the-counter medicines is a good way to stay healthy and comfortable during a trip abroad. Consult with your doctor before taking any new vitamins or medicines.)

• Passport for entry to Argentina and Chile (If you join both the Eclipse and Extension expeditions, we will be moving from Chile to Argentina together as a group so your passport will need to be easily accessible)

Peter Zelinka

EXPEDITION LEADER, ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY guide

Peter Zelinka is a nomadic nature photographer originally from Northeast Ohio. As an avid hiker and backpacker, Peter spent most his free time exploring the forests of Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.  After spending countless hours hiking with a point-and-shoot camera, Peter eventually became more interested in photography. In June 2014 he purchased his first DSLR - a Nikon D7100. He spent the next few years practicing macro, wildlife, astro, and long exposure photography. 

Peter graduated Summa Cum Laude from Youngstown State University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science. After graduation, he began working as an Information Systems Specialist at The Vindicator in Youngstown Ohio.

In June 2016, Peter quit his full-time IT job to pursue photography. He spent the next 4 months living out of his car, traveling across the country on a 15,000-mile roadtrip. Upon returning home, he began teaching photography lessons. 

Peter has now spent over 1 year living out of his car!  In April 2019 he began his latest adventure - teaching people all across America how to take amazing images of the night sky.

We rate this expedition as “moderate” activity level for the following activities: walking, hiking up to two miles at a time, glacier mini-trek (no experience required), stamina needed to manage your camera equipment, and stamina to stay up late to capture night photography, when possible.

Tips On Getting To Patagonia

Here are some tips to get to our meeting place in patagonia:

• Recommended Travel for Eclipse Expedition: Fly into the San Carlos de Bariloche Airport (BRC), where we will pick you up and you will not need further transportation. Arrange your flight so you land no later than 12:00 p.m. on December 12th, 2020. That will give you time to go through customs and get to our vehicle in the passenger pick-up area by 2 p.m. (please note: it is best to plan for a lot of wiggle time in your travels, as this area of Patagonia will have many visitors for the Total Solar Eclipse). Prior to the expedition, you will be given a telephone number to call to be sure you find us at the airport (download the phone application WhatsApp so we can communicate through it). We will leave the airport around 2:30 p.m. to head to the hotel, check-in and rest prior to our orientation dinner. If you have difficulty getting a flight into Bariloche prior to 12:00 p.m. on December 12th, just let us know before booking and we’ll organize your pickup.

• If you choose to come in on a day prior to our expedition start date, please let us know as soon as possible as we may be able to arrange for your transportation to the hotel. Otherwise, you can secure your own transportation from the airport to our beautiful hotel, the Design Suites (note: we will be moving to 5-star luxury art hotel, El Casco, on Dec 13th for the remainder of the Eclipse expedition).

• Recommend Travel for Patagonia Extension: We recommend flying in a day early since our day begins early on December 7th. If you would like to arrange to fly in a day early, you can add that option in the Booking section at the bottom of this page, and we’ll arrange for your hotel room and transportation from the airport.

• Flights for Patagonia Extension: If you’re reading this, it means you are not a procrastinator! In fact, you are so ahead of the game, that you are booking this trip before the airlines have flights available for our dates! That said, we like to be over-achievers too, and give you every piece of info you need. So, here goes: Please note, we are aiming for all Participants to fly into the Puerto Natales (PNT) airport which is only a 1-hour drive to our hotel, versus the Punta Arenas (PUQ) airport which is a 4.5-hour drive. As of now, it is too early to book any flights into PNT, but we will let you know once they are available. Otherwise, we will have everyone fly into PUQ (also too early to book at this time). Please let us know before booking any flights into the area on Dec 6th, as we want to be sure we are able to arrange for your pickup!

• If you are joining both the Eclipse Expedition and Patagonia Extension (woohoo!): You will want to join the same flight we are on from El Calafate back to Bariloche—that way, we will all travel as a group. We’ll let you know which flight we choose once they become available online!

• We invite you to utilize our travel partner based in Argentina for any flight questions or travel arrangements you would like assistance with. After booking with us, we will introduce you to our partners via email where you can make your request and send their coordination fee directly to them.
